Mary returned to Brooks County to teach in the Simmon Hill School and in surrounding communities of Barney and Pavo. In November of 1921, she married John Arnet Hall in Brooks County Georgia and lived with him in Quitman until his death in 1937. Mary then went on to complete graduate studies at Fort Valley State Normal College. This allowed her to become lead teacher in Thomas County. In March of 1945, Mary married Elihu Kellogg Sirman and lived with him until his death in 1949. She continued to live in Quitman and joined Beulah Baptist Church would she would serve on many auxiliary boards and 

Mary Etta Spencer was born on January 7, 1887 in the Spain community of Brooks County Georgia to Emanuel Spencer Sr. and Amanda Styles. She was the seventh of thirteen children. Mary moved with her family to Dixie Georgia in 1896 and attended the Simmon Hill School. She joined Simmon Hill Missionary Baptist Church in 1902 under Rev. Wiley F. Tarver. After Mary finished grammar school, she enrolled in Spelman Seminary in Atlanta, Georgia in 1908. She graduated with an English and Teaching diploma in 1913, becoming the first in the family to earn a degree in higher education.

groups until her death. Later in life she would take in her great niece, Felecia Pratt and raise her as her own. Mary Etta Spencer Sirman died on July 25, 1970 at Archbold Hospital in Thomasville, GA. Her writings and photos left behind have helped to immensely inform later generations on the history of the Spencer family.
