Marie V. Spencer was born on January 26, 1898 in Dixie, Georgia to Emanuel Spencer Sr. and Amanda Styles. She attended the Simmon Hill School. and was a member of Simmon Hill Missionary Baptist Church. The entire family was involved in farming and stories passed down by older generations claim that Marie being the youngest girl in the family used to "play sick" often in order to get out of working. One particular day Marie felt gravely ill one day and told her younger brother Benjamin, who thought she was faking. Unfortunately, Marie developed a severe case of nephritis (kidney failure). She suffered through the symptoms until her untimely death on March 18, 1921 at just 23 years old.
